Dave de Leeuw

Dave de Leeuw (Heerlen 1981) graduated from the Maastricht academy of fine arts and design in 2008. His oeuvre consists of paintings, drawings, sculptures and occasionally videoinstallations. His developing of multi-disciplinary work was introduced to the art public by museum director Wim van Krimpen.

De Leeuw’s works are characterized by expressive and energetic lines and portray isolated individuals in abstract landscapes, who oscillate between melancholy and humour, sensuality and loneliness, with abstract colour fields encasing the figures and emphasizing their powerful physicality. Gestural and raw brush strokes almost seem to erupt on the surface of the canvas.

His work is autobiographical. It is about his place in the world, the developments that are taking place therein and about his place in the immense depth of existence. ‘After all’, Dave de Leeuw argues, ‘the only person whose existence I can acknowledge, is myself.‘
